Great Neighbors Making a Difference

All of us have been touched in one way or another by the heartache and suffering in Haiti since the devastating series of earthquakes began on January 12th. And many around the world have been moved to take action. Last week, over 80 million TV viewers tuned in to the Hope For Haiti Now Telethon and raised nearly $60 million. But Hollywood isn’t the only place where people are coming out to help. Locally, we have a few stars of our own  who are making a difference where they can.

Westfield Residents Rise To Meet The Challenge.

Right here in Westfield, 3 enterprising high school students, Ryan Krasnoo, Billy Sickles and Ian Mackenzie quickly initiated the Hearts For Haiti campaign. Selling paper hearts for a dollar a piece to their friends in school and to neighbors around town, the trio quickly raised over $750 earmarked for the American Red Cross. Other students have followed suit, organizing additional fundraising efforts, all with the support of WHS Principal Peter Renwick.

Our local Boy Scouts will celebrate that organization’s 100th Anniversary on February 8th by demonstrating their commitment to service and community. The Scouts will run a town-wide collection of care package items to send to the people in Haiti, and will also raise cash donations to cover the shipping costs.

The young professionals group at St. Helen’s Church has announced a fundraiser this weekend to help doctors in Haiti get the medical supplies they so desperately need. This activity is being organized by Pier and Jeremy Davis, who have both done volunteer work in the past with medical teams in the country.

These are just a few of the countless examples of our neighbors coming out to help others in a time of need.  It’s people like these that make our communites such a special place to live!
